Giving Back

Our lawyers have a history of public service work, particularly with bar associations. Lynda Laing is currently a member of the Rhode Island Bar Association's Executive Committee. She is also a member of its Task Force for Unbundled Legal Services. Lynda has previously served as chair of the Bar Association's District Court/Bench Bar Committee and as a member of its Annual Meeting Committee. Lynda has given innumerable presentations for the Bar Association and other legal organizations on creditor's rights, bankruptcy and subrogation.

Tom Lyons is currently a member of the American Bar Association's Task Force on the Future of Legal Education. He was recently interviewed about legal education on WPRI's television show, "Executive Suite." (See the imbedded video). Tom is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and state Fellows Chair. He is a past president of the Rhode Island Bar Association and a long-time member of its Executive Committee. Tom is chair of the Bar Association's Technology Committee, past chair of the Bar Association's Superior Court Bench/Bar Committee and past Editor-in-Chief of the Rhode Island Bar Journal. Tom is a past member of the National Conference of Bar Presidents Executive Council. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Rhode Island Bar Foundation.

Tom has been a cooperating attorney with the Rhode Island Affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union for over 10 years and has handled many matters for them. With our associate Rhiannon Huffman, he recently helped a gun owner regain possession of his weapons from a local police department. Tom represented a class of plaintiffs who brought civil rights claims respecting the Truancy Court program operated in numerous schools by Rhode Island's Family Court. (See the accompanying newspaper articles). In 2007, the Affiliate named Tom a "Civil Libertarian of the Year" and in 2010, he was honored as a "Civil Libertarian of the Decade."
